When I was growing up, I tent camped constantly.
Some summers were spent camping in Canada, and spending that much time outdoors quickly teaches you one important lesson:
Mosquitoes can absolutely ruin a good trip.
About three years ago, I purchased a motorhome and started camping again with friends who had their own campers. One of the very first things I started researching was how to deal with mosquitoes, ticks, and biting insects without constantly covering myself in bug spray.
That is when I first came across two products that kept showing up over and over again during my research:
It was probably one of the first things I purchased for the motorhome.
At the time, I mainly thought about mosquitoes.
But after purchasing the Memory Lane property in New York, ticks quickly became the much bigger concern.
Anyone spending time outdoors in the Northeast already knows ticks have become a major problem.
Unfortunately, we have had firsthand experience with them while working on the property and exploring the woods around Memory Lane.
Over the past several months, we have found ticks crawling on us multiple times while clearing land, walking trails, and working outdoors.
Thankfully, until recently, none had actually bitten us.
Then about three weeks ago, that changed.
And the timing of it honestly convinced me even more that Sawyer Permethrin works.
The day I got bitten happened to be the one day I forgot to spray Permethrin on my pants.
Normally, we spray:
, Our shoes
, Pant legs
, Around our waistlines
The tick attached just above my waistline, exactly where my clothing had not been treated.
That was enough proof for me.
At this point, I would honestly rate Sawyer Permethrin a 10 out of 10.
We use the Sawyer Permethrin Spray on Amazon directly on our outdoor clothing before working outside, hiking, camping, or exploring the property.
The bottle claims treatments can last through multiple washes, but because ticks are such a serious concern in our region, we personally choose to spray our clothing daily anyway for extra peace of mind.
So far, we have had absolutely zero issues with:
, Smell
, Staining
, Skin irritation
, Damage to clothing
For us, it has been completely problem free.
Right now the weather in New York has still been relatively cool, so mosquitoes have not become a major issue yet this season.
While mosquitoes are definitely around, we have not had any major problems so far. Whether that is completely due to the Permethrin or partly because of the cooler weather is hard to say honestly.
I try to separate what I know from what I suspect.
But when it comes to ticks specifically, I absolutely believe this product works.
One thing worth mentioning is that Picaridin and Permethrin are slightly different products with different purposes.
Permethrin is meant for:
, Clothing
, Gear
, Shoes
, Outdoor fabrics
Picaridin is meant to be applied directly to your skin to discourage insects from landing on you.
From my past experience, I believe Picaridin works very well too, and I would probably rate it around an 8 out of 10 only because we havn't used it in a while and do not have any on hand to continue testing it extensively this season.
Of course, protecting Wyatt is just as important to us as protecting ourselves.
Wyatt is an Australian Cattle Dog with a pretty thick double coat, and because of the tick population around the property, we have been extremely careful checking him regularly.
Currently, Wyatt is on NexGard Plus, which claims to protect against:
, Fleas
, Ticks
, Heartworm
From what I understand, ticks and fleas generally need to bite first before the medication affects them, after which they die and fall off.
Even with how much time Wyatt spends running through grass and woods at Memory Lane, we have not found ticks on him.
At this point, based on our experience so far, I would honestly rate NexGard Plus a 10 out of 10 as well.
At this point, Sawyer Permethrin is no longer just a camping accessory for me.
It has become essential gear.
If you spend time:
, Camping
, Hiking
, Hunting
, Clearing land
, Working outdoors
, Exploring wooded areas in the Northeast
I genuinely believe products like this are worth having.
Ticks are not something I take lightly anymore, especially after experiencing firsthand how quickly they can become a problem.
For us, Sawyer Permethrin has become part of our daily routine at Memory Lane, right alongside boots, gloves, and work clothes.
